Tonight another photographer friend, Sara France, told me this crazy story about how a pregnancy portrait she was hired to shoot ended up becoming her documenting the surprise early birth of the baby instead! She said she was so honored to capture those moments for her clients and she felt changed because of it.
It got me to thinking about my own family and how lucky I was to document the birth of both of my nieces. It reminded me of this lovely quote I read last week: “We do not remember days, we remember moments.” I think this may be my new mantra because it has so much to do with why photography appeals to me. I am very aware of how fleeting life is, and there are so many moments I just want to hold on to.
Amelia’s birth was momentous for my first niece, Penelope, because it marked the end of her life as a single child. However, she knows what great friends my sister and I are and how much fun we have together, so she couldn’t wait to have a sister in her life, too.
These photographs are now over a year old (perhaps some of you saw the photographs I did of Millie’s first birthday) but they define the important moments from that day for me:
Beautiful child, beautiful sister, beautiful birth, beautiful aunt, beautiful pictures. Beautiful.
